Volunteer Records: News

from THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO, on 90.5 WXXE-FM in Syracuse, NY, www.wxxe.org - December 8, 2005

We began this week's festivities with our first Christmas spin of 2005, "So Glad It's Christmas" by our pal DAN PAVELICH of The Bradburys. Dan's track is included on the brand-new 2-CD seasonal set HOLIDAY HEART, a sequel to past TIRnRR Yuletime fave HO HO HO SPICE. Both HOLIDAY HEART and its predecessor are being sold to benefit Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center in New Jersey, so your purchase helps a worthy cause (and, y'know, earns you some Eleventh-Hour brownie points with Santa Claus, who's said to be currently making a list and checking it twice). Plus, you get cool Christmas tunes! Visit www.hohohospice.com to find out more.

Holiday Heart (Volunteer)

A two-CD set of original holiday tunes by “alternative-ish” songwriters like Ron Sexsmith, Rick Derringer and the Dismemberment Plan, plus some talented no-namers. All proceeds (after recouping costs) go to the Saint Barnabas Hospice in New Jersey. A great way to break the news to your record-store-loitering son that Grandma may not make it to New Year’s. www.hohohospice.com.

ELF APPROVED!

Christmas Albums, Sentimental to Silly by Rob Thomas for The Capital Times - December 7, 2005

• Various Artists, "Holiday Heart," Volunteer Records.

With 44 tracks spread out over two discs, there may be too much music for even the most diehard Christmas lover on "Holiday Heart." But it's for a good cause (New Jersey's St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center), and the sheer range of artists appearing on the CD is pretty impressive.

The wonderful singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith contributes his lovely "Maybe This Christmas," The Dismemberment Plan do a heartfelt "This Christmas," and Huffamoose (remember them?) returns to build a bridge between cultures with the witty "Hanukkah and Christmas Hand in Hand."

Not all of the rest are gems (such as Rick Derringer's sappy "Christmas Valentine"), and many of the musicians are fairly obscure. Still, there's enough good stuff to warrant a listen, so visit www.hohohospice.com for more details.

HOLIDAY HEART: An Eclectic Aural Celebration of Christmas and Chanukah (Volunteer Records) 2-CD set

If you go as far back in the Jersey scene as I do, you might remember Spiros Ballas as the program director for Rider College’s radio station back in the Eighties. A few years out of college, he started publishing a monthly newspaper called The Splatter Effect that supported local NJ music that lasted into the Nineties. And now he’s combined his love of music with his job at the St. Barnabas Hospice & Palliative Care Center to produce this second compilation of original holiday music, with all proceeds benefiting St. Barnabas.

As someone who’s had both parents in hospice care, I can vouch for what a wonderful life-affirming service this is, as it provides a way for terminally-ill family members to die with dignity and in comfort, often at home.

Holiday Heart is a bit different from most holiday compilations in that all of the artists wrote original music; there are no traditional carols or favorite old Christmas songs here.

The styles run the full gamut of indie rock, from folk and country to rock and pop, and while most of the contributors are fairly obscure artists, there are a few “names” here, like Ron Sexsmith, Rick Derringer, and Dismemberment Plan.

Two of the best tracks come from NJ artists – Boxcar Nancy’s earthy alt-country ballad “Feels Like Christmas” and singer/songwriter Jon Caspi’s wry Chanukah tune, “Eight Days.” Other highlights include contributions from NJ’s Super Karaoke Fun Time Band, Hoboken’s Professor & Mary Ann, The Number Theory, and Green To Think.

The disc is available from CDBaby.com and for more information on the compilation and St. Barnabas Hospice, you can visit the website www.hohohospice.com.

A merry little mix tape: Picking the best new songs of the season

After listening to five dozen new holiday CDs, I’ve got a sleigh bell-induced, Santa-sized headache.
I’ve also got a plan. This year I’m making my own holiday mixtape: the 12 downloads of Christmas 2005, plus one Hanukkah bonus cut. ...

(skipping non-Holiday Heart portion.)

Hanukkah bonus track: Jon Caspi, “Eight Days.” Until Springsteen does a modern day Hanukkah rocker, this killer cut will more than do. It’s part of “Holiday Heart” (Volunteer), a 44-track, 2-CD collection of mostly Christmas songs by mostly unknowns. OK, it’s mostly mediocre. But more gems and more Springsteen spirit can be found on this benefit for the New Jersey-based Hospice Awareness Project. Buy it at www.cdbaby.com

Holiday Heart - An Eclectic, Aural Celebration of Christmas and Chanukah
Volunteer Records - VolRec 002

The second annual holiday CD with proceeds going to Hospice is another fabulous collection of various styles. The jangly alt rock of The Dismemberment Plan's This Christmas and Leah Zicari's soothing ballad Thursday In December are a couple real gems. Rick Derringer shows a kinder, gentler side with Christmas Valentine while Jon Caspi's Eight Days tells a personal Chanukah story with a rockin' Americana beat. This CD is worth it for the fine music and the noble cause it helps. URL: http://www.hohohospice.com e-mail: volrecords@aol.com

Dear Volunteer Records,

To tell you how much I needed your gift, I’ll admit that I had no idea Rick Derringer was considered “eclectic.” Sure, you humbly raise awareness for non-profit hospices, but you simply can’t deny that Holiday Heart: An Eclectic, Aural Celebration of Christmas and Chanukah is anything short of revolutionary. It is almost like eclectic is eclectic again. I mean, Huffamoose and Whistle Jacket?! On the same CD?! What can I say, Spiro Ballas: Ce mélange est brillant!

Lastly, Merry Christmas to all (with exception of The Dismemberment Plan, Eddie Van Halen and Abdelaziz Bouteflika)!

Your Pal,

Richard Paul Evans

“Holiday Heart” Double-CD Set Sold to Benefit Saint Barnabas Hospice

What does a collection of “eclectic, friendly, alternative-ish holiday music” have to do with a hospice program? According to Spiro Ballas, Senior Volunteer Coordinator at Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center (SBHPCC), his holiday music compilation entitled “Holiday Heart” goes a long way toward spreading cheer, raising awareness about end-of-life care, and generating funds to benefit people and families dealing with advanced disease.

He explains, “Hospice gives tremendous support to patients and families during one of the most challenging times of their lives. It’s a form of healthcare that’s underutilized, mostly because people don’t know about it. We’re raising both awareness of and funds for, our non-profit program through the sales of ‘Holiday Heart.’”

Featuring catchy, original music reflecting the ups and downs of the holidays in modern times, “Holiday Heart” was crafted to tell stories about the holidays from different viewpoints. The first CD follows “the ebb and flow of romance during the holidays.” The second disc traces the path from the excitement of the coming celebrations, to the feeling of “enough is enough,” then concluding with hope that the true meaning of the holidays will endure throughout the year. “Holiday Heart” was mastered by six-time Grammy nominee Scott Hull, of Jigsaw Sound in New York City.

For information on how to order “Holiday Heart,” or to order their first CD entitled “Ho-Ho-Ho-Spice” (of which quantities are limited) visit www.hohohospice.com. These CDs may also be found at Borders Books and Music, official sellers of these limited-edition collections. All proceeds to benefit SBHPCC.

Some of the artists featured on the CDs have experienced hospice services themselves. Self-described “hopped-up folk singer” Leah Zicari says that when her father, a well-known recording engineer and sound designer, was diagnosed with cancer he requested that his family support him in his wish to die at home.

She explains, “The irony is that [my mother] worked at a hospital, and it certainly would have been easier for her to have him there where she worked…without hospice, she would not have been able to do it. Hospice provided the way for her to fulfill his wishes.”

Marc Bacino, a “Bubblegum Power-Pop” singer, says both of his grandmothers lived in hospice facilities. He was taken by the warm, home-like environments in which they lived. He says, “I truly believe hospice is the next best alternative to home care. It gave piece of mind to my family and I believe it allowed both my grandmothers to live out their days on this earth in dignity and grace.”

For more information about “Holiday Heart” or about volunteer opportunities at SBHPCC, call Mr. Ballas at 973-322-4866. SBHPCC provides services to residents throughout the state of New Jersey.

Memorable tunes, updated style make holidays sing

Lights up the CD player with: Two discs of remarkably intriguing and eclectic original rock, power pop, folk and singer-songwriter holiday tunes from the likes of Ron Sexsmith, The Montgomery Cliffs and The Number Theory. The 44-track album benefits the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center in New Jersey. Details online at hohohospice.com.

Leave it under the tree for: The discerning (and maybe quirky) music lover taking the less traveled, more challenging road in tune-appreciation

Review from Christmasreview.com - November 12, 2005

Hospice care at Christmas time? Death is a most natural part of our life cycle, just as natural as birth, and just as natural as greeting the crisp December air on Christmas morning or kissing a loved one under the mistletoe. Life is full of special moments, and death is a defining moment in that miraculous continuum.

Holiday Heart is "A HOSPICE Awareness & Benefit Project," a benefit in support of the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center serving New Jersey, providing hospice care for those who wait for those final moments that life offers and support for grieving family members. It is a grand cause and one that meshes naturally with the spirit that drives the holidays.

This 2-CD endeavor contains 44 seasonal songs reflecting 44 talented artists, an incredibly rich and diverse mix of pop, folk, country, and gentle rock. The performers are exciting independent artists of various sorts, and most songs are originals. The mood is consistently upbeat, but not raucous. The whole project hangs together very well; over 2-1/2 hours of enriching entertainment of the holiday sort!

With a collection this size, it is difficult to know where to start--the album is crowded with crown jewels by lesser-known musicians. What a find! Singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith's "Maybe This Christmas" is a well-written, emotive gem that is simple, sweetly-executed, and memorable long after it ended. Jon Caspi's raspy "Eight Days" is self-described American rock, telling the story of a Chanukkah "miracle" road trip. Jolynn Daniel's wistful "Doesn't Feel Like Christmas (Without You)" is a melancholy marvel, and Last Train Home's "Home for Christmas" is a very cool alt-country-rock tale about the girlfriend who got away. Prof. Louie & the Crowmatix do a terrific turn with the Chambers School Choral Ensemble on "Holiday Time Is Here." John Twist's jaded "Scrooge in Black and White" has some of the best lyrics I've heard in quite a while, and Lizanne Knott's "Merry Christmas" exudes a totally different tone and an embraceable message. Professor & Maryann's "Ten Tubas" is a lovely lyrical ditty, Kevin Briody's richly-rewarding vocal on his creatively-conceived "Walnuts & Rice" had me from the first note, and Nina Mankin's "Red Blue Yellow Green" covers Christmas colors and more with simple panache. There is something for almost everyone!

Holiday Heart is the ideal offering for those longing for something more original this holiday season. These generous albums will endlessly fascinate your guests and keep them guessing at your next seasonal gathering. And you benefit a worthy cause, to boot! Enjoy!

They're Made and On Their Way! - October 28, 2005

Hi. I know this whole project has taken longer than we anticipated, but the CDs arrived 10/24/05 and we're excited!

Borders Books and Music should have them around Nov. 1st and that's when CDBaby.com should have them, too.

CDBaby.com is a very reliable company supporting independent projects; you can trust them--I haven't heard any complaints from selling the 1st compilation through them.

I'll post a direct link when their page for Holiday Heart is set.

Thanks for being interested!

1st Review of Holiday Heart - October 23, 2005

Amplifier (issue #51) is the first publication to review Holiday Heart..They were given a home-burned, unmastered advance copy...They seemed to enjoy it:

Various Artists
Holiday Heart
Volunteer

On Holiday Heart, 44 acts deliver Christmas and Chanukah greetings in a variety of musical styles. The 2-CD set follows in the snow prints of 2004’s Ho Ho Spice, which was also billed as a Hospice Awareness & Benefit Project.

Leah Zicari’s delicate “Thursday In December” and Otis Gibbs’ Johnny Cash-influenced “Color Wheel” stand out among a multitude of sentimental ballads, but Holiday Heart is most enjoyable when the artists are cutting loose and having fun. Prof. Louie & The Crowmatix underscore the CD’s multi-cultural appeal with the rollicking “Holiday Time Is Here,” while Dan Pavelich taps into vintage ELO and 10CC for his melodic pop tune, “So Glad It’s Christmas.” Last Train Home contributes the C&W toe-tapper “Home For Christmas,” and Don McAvoy & The Great Whatever conjure finger-snapping ‘50s doo wop with “Best Little Christmas.”

Other highlights include Cathy Harrington’s peppy “Sha La La,” Project Pimento’s funny, Latin flavored “That’s Christmas,” The Montgomery Cliffs’ catchy “Christmas Lights,” Ron Sexsmith’s hopeful “Maybe This Christmas,” and Lizanne Knott’s engaging slice of slacker rock, “Merry Christmas.” As with any collection of original holiday songs, one person’s chestnut is another person’s dud, but Holiday Heart should have something to please everyone. Plus, it’s for a good cause.

Ho Ho Ho Spice - Various Artists

On the reverse of the CD cover it states: "Why Buy This Holiday Compilation?" and gives you 4 solid answers. 1) The Cause, well if you haven't checked out the short article on the cause and call for next years project go HERE now and check it out (as well as the call for submissions for next year). 2) The price, except for budget priced "old" collections, where can you get 49 songs on 2 CDs for the price of one CD? 3) The Rarity (Only 5,000 units). 4) The songs (we'll get into that). 5) Because IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!

This is a collection of mostly newly written holiday songs from a wide array of mainly pop "alternative-ish" Christmas music from some known names ( Better Than Ezra, Jim Babjak's Buzzed Meg (of Smithereens), Klark Kent (Featuring Stewart Copeland of the Police), Mike Daly (of Whiskeytown) and even Graham Parker duet with Nona Hendryx.) And then there are some bands and artists you may be hearing from in the future.

Of course I have to tell you of the best of the best, first off, NRBQ (yep, the legends) with A Christmas Wish, Glowfriends - Joy Of Christmas, the humorous "And To All A Good Night" by 5 Chinese Brothers, Helen Avakian - Christmas Tree, Michelangelo D'Amico - Heading Home For Christmas, and the tune by Better Than Ezra is wonderful "Merry Christmas Eve". This is a very good independent Christmas CD offered by the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center (or Volunteer Records).

The thing I want you to ask yourself if you are looking for a pop rock Christmas album is, how many independent albums have been released with all new material? The answer, well, actually I am holding it now. The cause is a very good one, and Christmas is the time of giving. The music is very strong, some a bit weaker, but in all, a very good collection. If you are looking for a unique Christmas album and you want to contribute to a worthwhile charity, click on the CD cover above. This is a memorable Christmas album, and if you're in a band, this will give you a bit of an idea what next year's collection is looking for.
